The Top Google Result for 'Cleaning Services in Somerset' Has No Website
We measured the 6 cleaning businesses Google returns for Somerset, MA. They average 4.95 stars across 394 reviews. The #1 result has no website at all, and the median site that does exist takes 11.4 seconds to show anything on a phone.

Start with what these companies have earned#
Search "cleaning services in Somerset, MA" and Google hands you six businesses. Between them they hold 394 reviews averaging 4.95 stars, and not one sits below 4.9.
Think about what that number means for a cleaning company. Strangers hand these crews the keys to their homes. The crews show up on time, do careful work in the most personal space a customer has, and leave things better than they found them, week after week, until hundreds of people have gone out of their way to say so publicly. A 4.95 average across six competitors is not a fluke. It is a market full of businesses that are excellent at the actual work.
Their websites are another story, and the gap starts at the very top of the page.
The #1 result has no website at all#
The business Google ranks first for the search, Site A here, has a perfect 5.0 across 46 reviews. It also has no website. None. A customer who wants to know prices, service area, or whether they handle move-out cleans has exactly one option: call and hope someone picks up between jobs.
That is the single biggest opportunity in this dataset, and it belongs to the business already winning the ranking.
Here is everyone we could measure. Speed is mobile Largest Contentful Paint from Google's own PageSpeed tooling, on a simulated mid-range phone. Google calls under 2.5 seconds "good" and over 4.0 seconds "poor."
| Rank | Rating | Reviews | Perf | Mobile LCP | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Site A | 1 | 5.0 | 46 | no website | no website |
| Site B | 2 | 4.9 | 84 | not measured | not measured |
| Site C | 3 | 4.9 | 99 | 55 | 6.0s |
| Site D | 4 | 5.0 | 18 | 57 | 12.5s |
| Site E | 5 | 5.0 | 67 | 72 | 4.5s |
| Site F | 6 | 5.0 | 80 | 64 | 11.4s |
Of the four sites we could time, all four fail Google's "good" threshold, and all four land in the "poor" band. The median is 11.4 seconds. The slowest takes 12.5 seconds to show anything.
Site B's site is live and reachable, but PageSpeed could not return a clean speed number for it, so we say "not measured" rather than guessing. None of the four measured sites had enough real visitor traffic for Google to report field data, so every figure above is a lab estimate, clearly labeled as such.
The problems that cost jobs are smaller than speed#
Speed gets the headline, but the findings that should sting are the cheap ones:
Two of the five sites have a phone number you cannot tap on a phone. A customer standing in a half-packed apartment, phone in hand, has to memorize the number, switch apps, and dial it manually. For a business whose entire pipeline is inbound calls, that is a hole in the bottom of the funnel.
One of the five lists a different phone number on its website than on its Google listing. Whichever one is wrong is quietly sending some fraction of callers to a dead end, and mismatched name-address-phone data also erodes Google's confidence in the listing itself.
Four of the five offer no way to book or even request a quote online. Cleaning is scheduled work. Customers are comparing three companies at 9pm after the kids are down. The one company with a working "request a quote" form gets the lead while the other two get a maybe-tomorrow phone call.
And three of the five have no analytics installed at all, which means they have no way of knowing any of this is happening to them. That is usually why it still is.
What this means if you run a cleaning company here#
The measurements are anonymous because these businesses did not ask to be graded, and the point is not to embarrass anyone. The point is that in this market, nobody is winning on the web yet. The reviews are extraordinary and the websites are an afterthought, which means the first company to close the gap gets the 9pm quote requests from Somerset, Swansea, and Fall River more or less uncontested.
I recommend always employing a number of different SEO strategies so that if one stops working, you don't have all your eggs in that basket.
Hawkins is talking about exactly this situation. Every company in this sample has one strategy, reviews, and it is working, for now. But reviews only win the customers who were already going to call. A site that loads, a form that books, and a listing whose data matches are separate baskets, and right now they are sitting empty.
The fixes, cheapest first#
Free, today, 15 minutes: make your phone number tappable. Open your site on your own phone and tap the number. If nothing happens, ask whoever built the site to wrap it in a tel: link, or do it yourself in your site editor: (508) 555-1234. That is the entire fix. It is the highest-value 15 minutes in this article.
Free, today, 10 minutes: check your NAP. Compare the phone number and address on your website to your Google Business Profile character by character. If they differ, fix whichever is wrong. One of the five sites in this sample is losing calls to this right now.
Under $30/month, this week: add a quote request form. Even a simple form (rooms, frequency, move-in or move-out, preferred day) beats "call us." You capture the lead at 9pm and call back in the morning holding every detail.
The bigger job, this month: the 11-second problem. Oversized photos are almost always the culprit on cleaning sites, because before-and-after galleries get uploaded straight from a phone camera at 4MB each. Compressing them is usually the difference between 11 seconds and 3. Run your own site at pagespeed.web.dev, free, and look at the LCP number before paying anyone to fix anything.
If you run a cleaning company on the South Coast and want the unanonymized version of where your own site stands, I will run the same measurements on it and walk you through them, no charge and no pitch. 774.559.8992 · Joshua.Amado@AvalonPartner.com
