The whole thing costs less than one full groom#

If you groom dogs in Somerset, your schedule probably fills the same way it has for years: regulars, referrals, and the phone. That is a real business, built on trust, and nothing below replaces it.

But when a new family moves onto Wilbur Avenue and their doodle needs a groomer, they do not ask a neighbor first anymore. They search. And what Google shows them in that moment decides whether they call you or the shop two towns over.

The good news: the entire starter stack — claimed Google profile, a one-page website on your own domain, online booking, and a professional email address — costs $30.48 in year one. Every price in this guide was checked on the vendor's own pricing page this week, and every one is linked so you can verify it yourself. Here is the stack, in the order to build it.

Step 1 — Claim your Google Business Profile (free, ~45 minutes)#

Before a website, before social media, before anything: your Google Business Profile — the listing with the map, hours, photos, and reviews that appears when someone searches your name or "dog groomer near me." Google confirms it plainly on the signup page: creating one is free.

This is the highest-leverage 45 minutes available to any local business, and the people who measure this for a living agree:

In our experience, for most industries, Google My Business drives substantially more leads than any other lead source for small businesses. The organic section of Google also still drives a good number of leads and should not be ignored.

(Google has since renamed the product to Google Business Profile — same thing.)

Do it properly: set the primary category to Pet groomer, exactly. Fill in hours, services with prices, and the service area if you do house calls. Upload at least ten real photos — your table, your tub, your before-and-afters, the front of the shop. Real photos of clean, happy dogs outperform any stock image ever taken.

Step 2 — Reviews: the engine that runs the profile (free, 10 minutes a week)#

BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 54% will visit a business's website after reading positive ones. For a groomer, reviews carry extra weight — people are handing you a family member.

The system is simple. In your Business Profile dashboard, "Ask for reviews" gives you a short link. Text it the same day, while the fresh-groom glow is still on: "Thanks for bringing Max in! If you have 20 seconds, a quick Google review really helps us: [link]." Then reply to every review, including the rough ones — calmly, briefly, like the professional you are. Google's own ranking documentation says this matters:

When you reply to customer reviews, it shows that you value their feedback. Positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out.

Never pay for reviews or trade discounts for them — it violates Google's policy and can get every review you have stripped.

Step 3 — Your own domain ($11.48 first year)#

Buy your name before someone else does. At Namecheap, a .com is currently $11.28 for the first year plus a $0.20 ICANN fee, renewing at $18.48/yr, with free WHOIS privacy. Something like somersetdoggrooming.com — short, spellable over the phone.

Even before you have a website, the domain gives you a professional email address, and it is yours permanently in a way a Facebook page never is.

Step 4 — A one-page website ($19/year, honestly)#

You do not need a big site. You need one fast page that answers, on a phone, in five seconds: what you do, where you are, what it costs, and how to book.

  • Carrd — Pro Standard is $19 per year, connects to your own domain, and produces exactly the kind of fast one-pager a grooming shop needs. This is what the $30.48 stack uses.
  • Wix — the cheapest ad-free plan (Light) is $17/month billed yearly, if you want more of a builder.
  • Squarespace — the Basic plan is $19/month billed annually. Prettier templates, ten times the price of Carrd for a one-pager.

Whatever you pick, three non-negotiables: your phone number as a tappable link (tel: link — tap it, it dials), your prices actually listed, and hours that match your Google profile exactly.

This matters more than it sounds. We recently measured the websites of five hair salons one town over in Fall River — same kind of appointment business, same customers. The median site took 6.8 seconds to show anything on a phone (Google's "good" threshold is 2.5 seconds), and three of the four live sites had a phone number you could not tap. Wonderful businesses, hundreds of five-star reviews — losing customers in the parking lot to a page that would not load. A one-page Carrd site avoids the whole failure mode by being too simple to be slow.

Step 5 — Online booking ($0)#

Grooming runs on appointments, and you groom with both hands busy. Every call you cannot answer mid-groom is a booking you may have lost.

  • Square Appointments — the Free plan is $0/month for one location, with unlimited staff calendars and an online booking page. You pay only card processing (2.6% + 15¢ in person, 3.3% + 30¢ online). For most one- or two-groomer shops this is the answer.
  • MoeGo — grooming-specific (vaccine records, pet profiles, mobile routes), starting at $49/month for mobile grooming plans; salon plan pricing differs, so check their page.
  • Gingr — the Spa plan is $109/month (or $100/month billed annually) — built for bigger operations with daycare and boarding.

Start with Square's free tier. Put the booking link on your Google profile, your website, and your voicemail. Upgrade to grooming-specific software when the schedule, not the money, demands it.

Step 6 — Professional email ($0–$12/year)#

somersetgroomer2020@gmail.com works, but hello@somersetdoggrooming.com gets treated differently by both customers and spam filters.

  • Zoho Mail — a Forever Free plan covers up to 5 users on your own domain, and Mail Lite is $1/user/month billed annually if you outgrow it.
  • Google Workspace — Business Starter is $7/user/month on the annual plan if you want Gmail, Drive, and Calendar under your own domain.

Step 7 — Photos and graphics ($0)#

Canva's free tier covers everything a grooming shop needs: price lists, holiday-hours posts, before-and-after collages. Canva Pro is $144/year and worth skipping until the free tier actually blocks you. Your real asset is your camera roll — a genuine photo of a freshly groomed golden beats any template.

What to do Monday#

Monday morning, before the first appointment: search your own shop name on Google from your phone. If the profile isn't yours, claim it. If it is, count the empty fields and fill them. Tuesday, buy the domain. By Friday you can have the Carrd page and the Square booking link live — the whole stack, built in evenings, for thirty dollars and change.

If you would rather spend those evenings with the clippers and hand the setup to someone local — that is what we do. No retainer required for a build this size.
