Fix Your Google Business Profile in 20 Minutes: A Walkthrough for Fairhaven Print Shops
A step-by-step, do-it-yourself walkthrough of the seven Google Business Profile fields that actually move local rankings — written for a print shop in Fairhaven, MA, usable by any South Coast business. Total time: about 20 minutes. Total cost: zero.

If you run a print shop in Fairhaven, most of your next customers will find you the same way: they type "banner printing near me" or "business cards Fairhaven" into Google, look at the map that appears, and call one of the top three results. Your Google Business Profile — the listing with your hours, photos, and reviews — decides whether you're in that map or under it.
The good news: the profile is free, you already own it (or can claim it in minutes), and the fields that actually move rankings can be fixed in about twenty minutes. This is the exact procedure, in order, cheapest and highest-impact first. Every step happens inside Google's own dashboard at business.google.com — no software to buy, nothing to install. Do it once this week, and you'll be ahead of most of the town.
One honest note before we start: we haven't measured Fairhaven's print shops, so we won't pretend to grade them. But we did measure a neighboring trade in the same town last week — the 17 HVAC contractors Google returns for Fairhaven, MA — and the pattern is worth knowing: 3 of 17 had no website at all, and 3 of the 13 live sites listed a phone number that didn't match their own Google listing. Small trades in small towns leave these basics undone everywhere. That's your opening.
Minute 0–5: Claim it and prove you're real#
Search your shop's exact name on Google. One of three things happens.
The listing exists and says "Own this business?" — click that link, sign in with a Google account you control, and follow the verification flow. Google will usually offer video verification (you walk through your shop on your phone showing signage and equipment) or a postcard to your address. Start it today; postcards take about a week.
The listing exists and someone already claimed it — maybe an old employee, maybe a marketing firm you stopped paying in 2021. Google has a recovery process: request access from the profile screen, and the current owner has 3 days to respond before Google lets you appeal.
No listing exists — go to business.google.com, click "Add business," and create it.
If you're already verified, this step costs you thirty seconds of checking. Move on.
Minute 5–7: Get the primary category right#
This is the highest-leverage two minutes in local SEO. In the dashboard, open Edit profile → Business category. Your primary category tells Google what searches you belong in, and it is weighted far more heavily than the additional categories.
The primary category on your Google Business Profile tells Google what your business does. This is one of the most important things you can optimize, so you must choose the category that most closely reflects the term that you want to rank for.
For a print shop the difference is real: "Print shop," "Commercial printer," "Digital printing service," "Screen printer," and "Banner store" are all separate categories. Pick the one that matches what you most want the phone to ring for. If walk-in small jobs pay your rent, that's "Print shop." If embroidered polos and team jerseys are the business, "Screen printer" or "Custom t-shirt store" may serve you better. Then add the others as additional categories — as many as honestly apply.
Minute 7–10: Make your name, address, and phone match everywhere#
Open your profile and read the phone number and address on it, character by character, next to what's printed on your website's contact page. They must be identical — same number, same suite, same spelling.
This sounds trivial. It isn't: in that Fairhaven HVAC measurement, 3 of 13 live sites contradicted their own Google listing on the phone number alone. Every mismatch makes Google a little less certain you're the real, current business — and sends some fraction of callers to a dead line. Fix the profile or fix the website, whichever one is wrong, and use that exact version on Facebook and Yelp too.
Minute 10–12: Hours — including the honest ones#
Edit profile → Hours. Fill in every day, and add holiday hours when they come up. Google strongly favors showing businesses that are open at the moment someone searches. If you answer the shop phone until 6 even though the counter closes at 5, consider listing the hours you actually answer. A profile with no hours reads as a business that may not exist anymore.
Minute 12–17: List every service, with a sentence each#
Edit profile → Services. This is the section most owners skip, and it's five minutes of pure gain. List everything: business cards, banners and signs, blueprints and wide format, wedding invitations, direct mail, shirts, embroidery, laminating, same-day rush jobs. Add a plain one-sentence description to each. You'll rank for services Google didn't know you offered, and customers see the full menu before they call.
Minute 17–20: Ten real photos#
Phone out. Walk the shop. The press running, the wide-format printer mid-banner, the counter, the front door with signage, finished work you're proud of. Upload ten. Google's systems read the content of the photos for relevance, and an active photo stream signals a live business. Recent photos also do quiet conversion work: a profile with three blurry pictures from 2019 tells a customer something you don't want told.
The bonus five minutes: your review link#
In the dashboard, click Ask for reviews and copy your short review link. Save it as a text shortcut on your phone. Every time a customer picks up an order they're happy with, text it to them before they're out of the parking lot. A steady trickle of recent reviews — not a hundred at once, a few every month — is one of the strongest ranking signals you can influence, and it costs nothing but the asking.
What we did not measure#
We have not audited Fairhaven's print shops, and this article grades no one. The Fairhaven numbers above come from our July 2026 measurement of the town's HVAC contractors, published in full here. The procedure itself is Google's own dashboard flow, documented at Google's Business Profile help pages — anyone can verify each step matches.
If you'd rather spend the 20 minutes running your press#
